Tier-One community housing provider Housing Choices Australia (HCA) is proud to announce that the expansion of the Queens Walk residential precinct in New Town, Hobart, is nearing completion, three months ahead of schedule. This project will see 65 individuals and families move into safe, secure, and affordable homes in the next couple of months.
Delivered by Housing Choices Tasmania in strong partnership with Homes Tasmania, the development represents Tasmania’s largest social and affordable housing project to date. It adds 38 one-bedroom and 27 two-bedroom apartments to the 84 existing homes that HCA has managed since 2013, bringing the total number of residences to 149.
Tasmanian Housing Minister Felix Ellis visited the site today along with representatives from Homes Tasmania, Housing Choices and project’s builder Fairbrother to see the final stages of the build.
Highlighting the significance of the project, David Fisher, CEO of Housing Choices Australia, said, “We are proud to deliver this major project ahead of schedule, allowing more Tasmanians to move into safe, affordable homes sooner.”
“This expansion is about more than just bricks and mortar – it’s about creating real housing options for those who need them most. It reflects our continued commitment to building quality homes that support wellbeing and more inclusive communities.”
The expanded precinct honours the historic character of the original 1950s buildings while introducing modern, sustainable housing that fits naturally into the parkland setting.
“It’s a thoughtful integration of old and new. We have worked closely with existing residents to ensure this new development grows the Queens Walk community in a way that feels respectful, inclusive, and connected. It’s a place where people will feel they belong,” added Mr Fisher.
Designed by Cumulus Studio and built by Tier 1 OFSC-certified builder Fairbrother, with landscape design by REALMstudios, the project features contemporary, energy-efficient homes nestled within a leafy, parkland setting. Communal gardens and gathering spaces have been purposefully integrated to enhance the natural amenity and support inclusive living.
Located close to public transport, sporting facilities, and walking and cycling paths, Queens Walk is ideally positioned to support livability, independence, and wellbeing for all its residents. The homes will be managed by HCA under a 40-year ground lease with Homes Tasmania, strengthening long-term housing security for low-income Tasmanians.
“The project highlights the power of partnership and what’s possible when government, builders, and community housing providers come together with a shared vision to deliver safe, affordable homes that strengthen communities.” added Mr Fisher.
