Housing Choices Australia has officially opened its new Western Australian office in East Perth, marking an important milestone in the organisation’s continued growth and commitment to delivering affordable housing and thriving communities across the state.
The opening brought together residents, partners, government representatives and staff to celebrate the occasion and reflect on the role community housing plays in addressing Western Australia’s housing needs.
The event commenced with a Welcome to Country by Whadjuk/Balardong Nyungar Elder Aunty Sandra Harben, who spoke about connection, belonging and the importance of community.
Housing Choices Australia was pleased to welcome Western Australian Minister for Housing and Works, Hon John Carey MLA, who acknowledged the contribution of the community housing sector in increasing housing opportunities for Western Australians.
CEO Leilani Frew reflected on the transformative impact of housing and Housing Choices Australia’s purpose of providing homes that support people to build brighter futures.
“Safe, secure and affordable housing provides the foundation for people to participate in their communities, pursue opportunities and build the lives they want for themselves and their families,” Ms Frew said.
A highlight of the event was hearing directly from residents. Resident and artist Trish shared her housing journey and spoke about the importance of connection and community, noting that when people come together, they “feel more like family and community”.
The opening also featured a resident art showcase, displaying works created by artists from Housing Choices Australia’s Western Australian communities. A resident panel discussion provided further insight into what home means to residents, the role creativity plays in their lives, and the positive impact stable housing can have on wellbeing, confidence and connection.
Since joining with Access Housing in 2020, Housing Choices Australia’s Western Australian team has grown to almost 70 employees and now supports residents across nearly 1,900 homes throughout Perth metropolitan, Peel and the South West.
Housing Choices Australia looks forward to continuing to work with government, industry and community partners to increase housing choice and support thriving communities across Western Australia.
