About the project
The Busselton Affordable Housing Project will deliver 30 new social and affordable homes in Busselton, 195 kms south of Perth, by the end of 2026.
In partnership with the WA State Government and DevelopmentWA, this $19m residential project is funded as part of the WA Government’s Housing Diversity Pipeline (HDP), reflecting its commitment to increase new housing supply in the South West.
Located opposite Churchill Park and in walking distance from Busselton’s vibrant Queen Street hub with easy access to public transport, shops, services, and amenities, this architect-designed development by Fremantle-based Cast Studio will feature 22 one-bedroom and 8 two-bedroom apartments. The apartments will be built to Silver Liveable standards and a minimum 6-star NatHERS ratings.
Planning and design of the project is consistent with the City of Busselton’s Planning Strategy, which seeks to increase high quality affordable housing in the area.
Thirty-one (31) off-street carparks are included in the development, along with carefully considered greenspaces, verge landscaping and communal areas for residents.
Housing Choices WA is an independent not-for-profit community housing provider that manages homes and communities for over 3,000 Western Australians in the Perth, Peel, and South West regions. It is part of the Housing Choices Australia Group that provides safe and affordable homes for more than 13,000 Australians across five States.
Housing Choices WA lodged a planning application in December 2024 with the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, using the Significant Development Pathway, a major initiative of the WA government’s planning reform program. The application was open for public comment until Firday 21 February 2025.
What is community housing?
The community housing sector is a long standing and vital part of the Australian housing spectrum, alongside public housing and private housing. ‘Social housing’ is an umbrella term that includes both public housing and community housing. It generally indicates housing that involves some rental subsidy.
In Western Australia, public housing is managed by the WA Department of Communities.
Community housing is owned and/or managed by non-government, not-for-profit, registered housing agencies like Housing Choices. We are regulated by the WA Registrar of Community Housing, and have specialist expertise in property development, property management, tenancy management, placemaking and community building.
Community housing residents come from all walks of life; singles, couples, families, older women, newly arrived Australians, and people with disability. Currently there are over 20,000 households on the public housing waitlist in WA.
For over 15 years the Housing Choices Australia Group has provided safe and secure homes to those who live on low and moderate incomes, who struggle to find safe and affordable homes in the private rental market.
We help our residents maintain and enjoy stable tenancies, ensure they have access to the support services they need, and live in communities that will improve their health, circumstances and life opportunities.
