Housing Choices Tasmania has completed the major expansion of the Queens Walk housing precinct in New Town, with the first residents already settling into their new homes.
The project has delivered a mix of 65 new social and affordable homes and is one of Tasmania’s largest community housing developments.
Delivered in partnership with Homes Tasmania and completed two months ahead of schedule, the expansion includes 38 one-bedroom and 27 two-bedroom apartments. This brings the total number of homes within the precinct to 149, strengthening an established community in a well-connected location in Hobart.
To mark the completion, Eleri Morgan-Thomas, CEO of Homes Tasmania, visited the precinct with Michael Lennon, Interim CEO and Hannah Harvey, Chief Operating Officer of Housing Choices Australia.
Hannah Harvey said the project represents a major investment in high-quality community housing and demonstrates what strong partnerships can deliver.
“Queens Walk shows the very best of what community housing can achieve – well-designed, sustainable homes that are integrated into an existing neighbourhood and support people to live well.”

These homes will provide long-term security and stability for Tasmanians who need them most.” Ms Harvey said.
The precinct brings together the old and the new, retaining the character of the 1950s buildings alongside modern, energy-efficient homes that integrate well within the precinct.
“We are especially grateful to the residents who lived on site during the development phase. They shared their experiences and perspectives with us, and that helped ensure the project was delivered in a way that respected the community already in place.” said Ms Harvey.
Designed by Cumulus Studio with landscaping by REALMstudios and built by Tier-1 builder Fairbrother, the development combines contemporary architecture, energy-efficient design and shared green spaces.
Located close to public transport, recreation facilities and walking and cycling paths, the precinct offers residents easy access to everyday services and amenities. As part of the project, outdoor and shared spaces were also upgraded to encourage community connection, with new garden beds, a BBQ area, play equipment, accessible pathways and refreshed communal areas.
Housing Choices Tasmania will manage the homes under a 40-year ground lease with Homes Tasmania, ensuring ongoing access to safe, stable and affordable housing for Tasmanians on low and moderate incomes.
