New Generation Catherine House

New Generation Catherine House, Adelaide

About the project

Construction is underway on New Generation Catherine House, a purpose-built accommodation and support facility that will transform how women experiencing homelessness, domestic and family violence and trauma are supported in South Australia.

Delivered in partnership between Catherine House and Housing Choices South Australia, both part of the Housing Choices Australia Group, the $36 million development will provide 52 new apartments alongside a dedicated Women’s Centre, bringing accommodation and recovery-focused support services together in one location.

The development will include 20 crisis accommodation dwellings and 32 social housing apartments, providing safe and secure accommodation for women, including women with infants and children.

The dedicated Women’s Centre will provide trauma-informed recovery, education, wellbeing and training programs. Bringing these services together on one site will strengthen connections between housing, mental health, education and employment support while providing a safe and supportive environment for women to recover and work towards greater independence and housing stability.

New Generation Catherine House will replace ageing facilities and consolidate Catherine House’s accommodation, support services and programs into a purpose-built location. The integrated design will also improve operational efficiencies and coordination between services.

The project is supported through a combination of Australian and South Australian Government funding, Housing Choices Australia investment, debt financing and philanthropic support. Funding and financing includes support from Housing Australia, the Australian Government Department of Social Services, SA Housing Authority, Housing Choices South Australia and Catherine House donors.

Built by Hindmarsh Constructions, the development is expected to be completed in early 2027.

For more than 37 years, Catherine House has provided crisis and longer-term accommodation and support services for women experiencing homelessness in South Australia. In 2021, Catherine House joined the Housing Choices Australia Group, creating more housing pathways and opportunities for women experiencing homelessness.

What is community housing

Community housing is owned or managed by non-government, not-for-profit, registered housing agencies like Housing Choices. We partner with a range of support services and community organisations, enabling us to meet the immediate and longer-term needs of our residents, so that they can thrive and maintain long-term tenancies.

The community housing sector is a long standing and vital component of the Australian housing system and receives government funding to help address affordable housing shortages across the country. Over 100,000 Australian households currently live in community housing-owned and managed homes with subsidised rent, based either on a discount to the market rent or as a percentage of household income.

Social housing involves some degree of rental subsidy and is an umbrella term for public or community housing. While community housing is run by not for profits like Housing Choices, public housing is owned by the state governments. Community housing providers are regulated by the state and hold specialist expertise in property development, property management, tenancy management and community development.
