Your story

Why tell stories?

Story-telling is an art form as old as human interaction itself.

Today, its power for organisations lies in the ability to communicate the experiences and sentiments of key stakeholders in their own words, to show the human face of the organisation that serves them, and to engage with stakeholders in a deeply personal way.

The unique stories of our residents, stakeholders, partners and staff are integral to our core purpose as an community housing provider and the work we do every day. We share a common story with them. Without them, there is no Housing Choices.

This is why we chose to embark on the Your Story is Our Story story-telling project as a celebration of the people we house and the staff who have helped them get their lives back on track through the security of safe, affordable housing.

How the project evolved

Your Story is Our Story was initially conceived as a framework for delivering Housing Choices’ communication and stakeholder engagement strategy. A key feature was a new website featuring information about residents and staff, packaged in multiple, user-friendly digital formats.

Who was involved

Your Story is Our Story was developed in close collaboration with residents and staff through:

  • Workshops in all our offices for staff to tell their own stories and identify residents who might wish to participate
  • Pre-interviews with potential storytellers to explain the project and further scope their stories
  • Interviews, photography and video shoots over a whole day with individual staff and residents in their homes and local communities
  • Launch events to share and celebrate the completion of phase one of Your Story is Our Story.

Where to from here?

Over time, we’d like to build on these initial stories to create a rich database of stories in various formats as a powerful testament to the enormous social impact of affordable housing.

We hope to share the Your Story is Our Story stories with current and potential residents, support partners, funders and the affordable housing sector.

We warmly thank our storytellers for sharing their time, their homes, their passions and their remarkable journeys.
