The Common Ground model was introduced to South Australia by internationally-renowned community development leader Rosanne Haggerty, founder of Common Ground New York.
Common Ground Adelaide was established in 2006 by members of the Adelaide business community and the South Australian Government bringing people on low incomes together with others at risk of homelessness in a residential complex including self-contained apartments, communal areas and office spaces with on-site support. For those in the highest need, housing is coupled with an intensive, case-managed support program to help them maintain their tenancy and improve their lives.
In 2015, the organisation joined forces with Housing Choices Australia ensuring Common Ground’s sustainability into the future.
There are currently three main Common Ground sites in the Adelaide CBD and two in Port Augusta.
The Common Ground support program, now managed by Housing Choices South Australia in Adelaide and the Salvation Army in Port Augusta, continues to thrive. Housing Choices is committed to expanding our supportive housing programs to prevent rough sleeping and help end the homelessness experience for more people.
